On August 18, Virginia Patton, who is best known for playing George Bailey’s sister-in-law in the holiday film It’s A Wonderful Life, passed away at 97 years old in an assisted living facility.

In the 1946 film, Patton played Ruth Dakin Bailey, a war hero’s wife. Her most well-known scene was at the Bedford Falls train station when she met George and Uncle Billy.

Anne Ann Patton was born on June 25, 1925, in Cleveland. After high school, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. She grew up in Portland, Oregon.

Patton, who was a niece of World War II General George Patton, caught the attention of It’s a Wonderful Life director Frank Capra via a USC play. The timing could not have been more perfect, as her Warner Bros. contract had just expired. After reading for Capra, he decided to sign her immediately.

In 1948, after her lead role in the cult film favorite It’s a Wonderful Life, Patton had speaking roles in two productions with social relevance: The Burning Cross, which was based on the Ku Klux Klan, and Black Eagle–a Western.

She stopped acting after a minor part in The Lucky Stiff (1949).

After getting married in 1949, General George S. Patton III and Cruse W. Moss relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan. They had three children and were together for 69 years until his death in 2018.

Not only did Patton serve as a docent at the University of Michigan’s Museum of Art, but he was also the president and director of the well-known Patton Corp., an investment and real estate holding company.

No plans for a memorial have been revealed.
