Tiger Woods had surgery on his right ankle at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, less than two weeks after he withdrew from the Masters due to a damaged right leg during the third round.

“Earlier today, Tiger underwent a subtalar fusion procedure to address his post-traumatic arthritis from his previous talus fracture,” a statement on Woods’ Twitter read.

“It was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at HSS Sports Medicine Institute in New York City. He has determined the surgery to be successful. Tiger is currently recovering and looks forward to beginning his rehabilitation.”

“He’s resting now and will start the recovery process,” Mark Steinberg, his agent said.

According to Steinberg, it is not yet determined when Woods can resume playing golf, and there is no specific timeline for his return.

“The first goal is to recover and lead a much more enjoyable day-to-day life,” he stated.

During the rainy third round of the Masters on Saturday, Woods had difficulty walking and the round was suspended before it finished.

On Sunday morning, Woods withdrew from the competition after just making the cut.

In February 2021, Woods was driving an SUV in suburban coastal Los Angeles when he crashed and suffered multiple fractures in his right leg and ankle. The car was traveling at a speed of about 85 mph before it tumbled down the side of a hill.

According to Woods, the injuries were so serious that doctors considered amputation as a possibility.

Due to the car crash, the individual who returned to play at the 2022 Masters at the age of 47, has undergone several leg surgeries.

It is highly unlikely for Woods to participate in the PGA Championship next month as the estimated recovery time for subtalar fusion is around eight to 12 weeks. Furthermore, the tournament will be held at Oak Hill in Rochester, N.Y., with potentially cold temperatures which would have made it difficult for Woods to play even if he was not injured.

The U.S. Open will take place from June 15-18 at Los Angeles Country Club, while the British Open is scheduled for July 20-23 at Royal Liverpool in England.
