Vinny Desautels is a special kid who has been growing his hair out in an effort to help cancer patients who need wigs but, in an ironic twist of fate, he is now facing this same type of scenario. When he was just 7, he opted to do this good deed to help those who need it but just recently, he has now been diagnosed with the big c himself. For more than 2 years, he had to deal with a lot of kids taunting him for his long hair due to the fact that he is a boy but he never let that deter him from his mission. It was not long before his hair was long enough to donate to patients who were in dire need of a wig and it was now 13 inches. In a recent statement, he said that he wants to help as much as he can so that they don’t have to rely on doctors to combat cancer. Some of the boys at school would refer to him as a little girl but he never let it get to him.
In a recent statement, his folks mentioned that he would often get mistaken for a girl but he always took it in stride. His father was a combat veteran and is quite proud of what he is doing for others. The sad part is not long after he had cut off his hair he was hit with a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. One of the first symptoms he got was when he had knee pain and this is how he knew something was wrong. As he was ready to hit the shower, he was quick to notice a lump on his hip and that’s when his folks took him to the ER in an effort to find out what was going on. This is when they found a growth on one of his bones and it soon spread to his eye and right cheek. In response, his folks set up a GoFundMe for him and it was not long before they were able to raise more than $400,000 to help pay for all of his treatments and support his family.
At the time, his mom was already six months along with a new baby and this is why they were not able to afford any of these treatments without a GoFundMe. Over the next few weeks, there were a lot of doctor’s appointments and surgeries to help him beat this cancer but none of these stays in the hospital were particularly cheap. In a recent statement, they were quick to note that they are quite grateful for all of the people who have given to the campaign to help him beat this cancer. Vinny has said that he plans to beat this and as soon as he does, will get right back to growing out his hair to help those who need it the most. The doctors do not know if he will be able to beat it but so far, he seems to be responding well to the treatments he has been given right now. His folks are confident that they’ll be able to get past this and continue helping cancer patients all over the world who need it.
