One of the worst things people can do is discriminate against someone because they’re different. In fact, this often happens to African Americans, women, the homeless and many other groups with a disadvantage. In this instance, one woman says she can’t get a job because she pretended to be a Black American. A woman who was born white, named Rachel Dolezal, was a leader in the NAACP and pretended to be a Black woman. Consequently, when people found out she was faking her race, she was forced to find a new career. This caused a domino effect of struggles. She even decided to take the West African name of Nkechi Amare Diallo. This did nothing to hide her true identity which means she still can’t find a decent job. She also says there’s plenty of false information about her on the internet. And this is why she decided to write a book about her struggles called In Full Color. Of course, those who read her book might gain a better understanding of why she chooses to identify as transracial, among other things.

Dolezal struggles to provide for her family because she lost her career. Furthermore, while life may be a challenge, she continues to identify as a Black woman but wishes people could see her for the human being she is. It can be extremely difficult for someone to be treated like they’re not human when they may not have immoral intentions. Instead of having a normal career, she’s a single mother of three who’s forced to get creative to find work. For instance, to make money, she delivers “pep talks” to different organizations and braids hair. Dolezal has applied for jobs she’s qualified for, but with no success. Other than this, she applied to work at a casino and as a hotel maid. She also wears her hair in braids on a regular basis to advertise her hair-braiding business.

Since Rachel Dolezal made the mistake of pretending to be a Black woman, people don’t seem to trust her. But do they have good reason to turn her down for jobs and even question her intentions? After all, maybe she identifies as “Black” because she genuinely admires African Americans and wants to be more like them. Although people don’t know Rachel personally, they judge her. An intelligent person might wonder if she actually did anything wrong to deserve to be treated so harshly. One explanation for this mistreatment is that there are too many bullies in this world who enjoy kicking people when they’re down. In the opinions of mature people, those who judge others for seemingly no good reason lack empathy. And, while Rachel may not be perfect, people should remember that no one else is either. Although being a Black American requires more than changing the color of one’s skin, some people can feel like an African American internally, even if they weren’t born this way. While no one may know how honest Rachel Dolezal is, she does deserve a chance to prove her honesty. Besides this, no one knows if she even deserves to be treated poorly in the first place. For this reason, she should be given respect like other human beings.
