According to Cecilia Tesch, social media has ruined her daughter’s life. The mother of a girl in Colorado has sued Facebook and its parent company, Meta, alleging that her daughter became addicted to social media and developed an eating issue as a result of it. The mother of a seven-year-old girl from Pueblo, Colorado, alleged that her daughter became hooked to Meta’s social media platforms at the age of seven and that her fixation on the sites exacerbated an incurable eating disorder that could have caused her death if she hadn’t received treatment in time.

According to Tesch, her thirteen-year-old daughter has taken up self-harm as a coping mechanism because of her “addictive and problematic use of the (social media) platform.” In addition, the suit states that constant notifications from Facebook and other platforms have disrupted the girl’s sleep schedule by keeping her up all night with dings and beeps.

Tesch recently filed a lawsuit against social media with the United States District Court in Denver, claiming that it has diverted her daughter’s attention from other activities and caused sleep deprivation due to the “constant notifications.”

Even though Facebook has always said that users need to be thirteen years or older, RF still got an account and started using social media when she was only seven. Tisch’s parenting decisions are unknown, such as if the mother from Colorado set any rules for her daughter regarding internet usage. It is also unclear what actions, if any, Tisch took to prevent her daughter from accessing social media platforms.

The concerned Colorado mother filed a lawsuit against Meta on July 20, 2022, which owns both Facebook and Instagram. The prominent social media firm was sued by her lawyer.

According to a lawsuit filed by RF, the social media platform induced “sleep deprivation, body dysmorphia, an eating disorder, self-harm, severe anxiety and depression” as a result of her dependence on it.

The suit also claims that teenagers and young children are susceptible to becoming hooked on Facebook and other social networking sites. Tisch and her daughter claim that they were unaware “of the clinically addicting and mental harmful effects of Facebook.”

The claim seeks punitive damages that have not been specified in the lawsuit. The complaint also requests that the firm pay for the daughter’s medical expenses as a result of her social media dependence.

The complaint also lists a number of other parties, including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg.

What are your thoughts on this mother filing a lawsuit against Facebook? Do you think social media can be addictive and harmful? Should children be able to sign up for social media platforms, or should the age requirement be thirteen years old?
