Cyndi Lauper’s son, Declyn “Dex” Lauper, was arrested in July for possession of a stolen car. The 24-year-old hip hop singer, who also goes by the name Declyn Thornton (after his father David Thornton), is currently facing charges.
The car was a 2014 Mercedes Benz with Pennsylvania license plates that matched those of a Chrysler. The Bronx had reported the car stolen back in 2020.
After attending a memorial service for Ethan Reyes, a 14-year-old rapper who was fatally stabbed in the subway and went by the stage name Notti Osama, Dex sat in the stolen car that was double parked. The police department announced that the 18-year-old was involved in a brawl with another 15-year-old at the 137th Street/City College subway station on July 9. The victim,Dex, succumbed to his injuries on July 17. The assailant was apprehended early morning on July 18th.
Dex was arrested and given a desk-appearance ticket for unlawful possession of the stolen property in the fifth degree and unauthorized use of a vehicle in the third degree.
Dex’s court date was August 10th. When the police approached Dex in the stolen car, according to prosecutors, he told them, “You probably know who I am.” He stated, “I’m an artist, you probably know who I am. My mother’s Cyndi Lauper. It’s not my car, someone told me to sit in it. My mother is Cyndi Lauper.”
Though he remained silent, Dex had his girlfriend and father by his side during his court appearance in front of Judge Vanessa Lewis. In the end, Judge Lewis decided to release him on recognizance.
He refused to give a comment to reporters. He only said, “No words, brother, speak to my attorney.”
Dex and his mother were interviewed on the red carpet at the VMA’s in 2021.
