A peculiar phenomenon is sought by many tourists in the Pacific State of Indonesia’s Bali island. While thousands of travelers come to the location for its gorgeous climate and diverse fauna, as well as its lush jungle setting, there is another attraction that has drawn people to the country for years. A Boeing 737 has been abandoned in a large ravine along the busy Raya Nusa Dua Selatan Road on Bali for so long that it has become a bit of an attraction in recent years.

The abandoned plane rests in a limestone quarry near Pandawa Beach, Bali’s most popular attraction. Thousands of tourists from all around the world visit the quarry each year to see the abandoned Boeing 737 in its full splendor and attempt to discover what happened to the aircraft and why it was left behind in Bali.

According to one legend, the abandoned plane got its start. In an effort to build a restaurant that would be located within the aircraft, a wealthy entrepreneur brought the plane in pieces and reassembled it in the quarry. According to legend, however, before the project could be completed, the businessman ran out of money and was forced to abandon it.

The plane is currently stuck in the quarry but can be easily explored by those who are willing to climb the stairs to enter the aircraft. It’s interesting to see what the would-be restauranteur was doing before he ran out of money and had to abandon the project.

The plane is unbranded and has no identifying features, making it tough to track down its origins. It’s further complicated by the fact that it’s in a quarry near some shipping containers in a remote location.

This is not the only retired Boeing 737 on Bali, as there are at least two more. A Dunkin’ Donuts coffee shop shares a fence with one of the other abandoned Boeing 737s. The wing of the airplane actually crushes down onto the wall of the store, hanging over an alleyway.

The fate of these two Boeing 737s on Bali’s island is uncertain, but they have attracted a steady stream of tourists interested in learning more about their origins.

Although there is no clear explanation for why Bali attracts abandoned Boeing 737 aircraft, it is reasonable to assume that the area simply wants to keep them nearby and utilize them as attractions. These planes may not be capable of doing much more than bringing people to visit them, but they are certainly fascinating sights to see, especially in places where airplanes are uncommon.
