Imagine spending a lazy afternoon scouting out neighborhood tag sales and ending up a millionaire!
That’s what happened to one New York family when they purchased for only $3 an ornate, white bowl to display on their mantle. After some time, the design, an interesting pattern, aroused their curiosity as to its origin.
Their research revealed that it was an ancient Chinese glazed, white stoneware design called Ding Ware, created in the era of the Song Dynasty, the period between 960-1279 A.D. Realizing then how old and rare this $3 item was, they decided to inquire about its real value and have it appraised, but they never imagined it would be as valuable as it turned out.
They were astonished to find out that the $3 bowl they so cavalierly displayed on their mantle in plain sight without worry of insurance one would normally spend to protect what would be considered an investment was valued at $2,225,000 as it sold at Sotheby’s.
This story might make one want to spend the rest of his or her spare time browsing tag sales in hopes of hitting this kind of jackpot, but people who are ridding themselves of what they might consider junk are also warned by revelations like this to be careful about what they consider disposable.
It might not be so easy to duplicate this kind of good fortune. Good luck!
