In a scandal that perfectly captures the rot in America’s immigration and education systems, ICE agents arrested Ian Andre Roberts, a Guyanese national who somehow rose to become the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools—despite having a 2024 deportation order and prior weapons charges dating back to 2020.

The arrest, which revealed Roberts was carrying a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash, and a fixed-blade knife while trying to evade authorities, has shocked parents and taxpayers alike. But the story gets worse: Roberts was not only living illegally in the U.S.—he was also a registered Democrat voter in Maryland, raising fresh concerns about election integrity and non-citizens on voter rolls.

Conservatives online quickly connected the dots, pointing out that Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris, who defended Roberts, once worked as Michelle Obama’s Chief of Staff. The connection to the Obamas has only fueled speculation that Roberts’ shocking rise inside the public school system wasn’t an accident but yet another example of Democrats protecting their own, even if it puts communities at risk.

One viral post summed it up: “Hold up… the Chair of the Des Moines school board used to be Michelle Obama’s Chief of Staff… and knowingly protected an illegal alien while he was Superintendent on a $300,000 salary? Unreal.”

ICE detailed the case in a press release that read more like the plot of a crime thriller than the résumé of a public school official. “ICE Des Moines arrested Ian Andre Roberts, a criminal illegal alien from Guyana in possession of a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash and a fixed blade hunting knife.” The release confirmed Roberts had been living in the U.S. illegally since his student visa expired after his 1999 entry, and that a judge had ordered him removed in May 2024.

Despite this, Roberts managed to land one of the highest-paying education jobs in the state, overseeing thousands of students—all while carrying weapons charges on his record. How did this happen? That’s the question Republicans are demanding answers to.

Maryland State Delegate Matt Morgan raised another pressing concern: “If illegal aliens are not allowed to vote, why would they be on the voter rolls in the first place? And how would that enhance immigration enforcement?” His comments reflect a growing unease over the integrity of America’s elections, particularly in Democrat-run states where loose voter roll management and lax ID requirements open the door for abuse.

Yet instead of apologizing to parents and taxpayers, School Board Chair Jackie Norris tried to spin the scandal with woke language. After Roberts’ superintendent license was finally revoked, Norris issued a statement urging the community to practice “radical empathy.” She claimed, “Radical empathy is the recognition that we can disagree and still empathize with each other.”

Parents, however, aren’t looking for empathy. They’re looking for accountability. How did an illegal alien with a deportation order, weapons charges, and no work authorization end up in charge of their children’s education—while cashing a six-figure taxpayer-funded paycheck?

The answer may lie in a system more interested in diversity quotas and political connections than safety and the rule of law. Roberts’ case is not just a scandal—it’s a warning sign about the Democrats’ reckless immigration policies, their ties to dangerous actors, and their willingness to gamble with America’s children.
