Meghan’s commonly known nickname is “Meg.” According to Katie Nicholl in her latest book, “The New Royals”, Meghan Markle has been given a nickname by King Charles III that is vastly different from what others call her.

The nickname arose from Markle’s personality: she is one tough cookie. Her father-in-law needed to find the perfect name that would describe her resiliency better than any other word could.

“Charles reportedly nicknamed his future daughter-in-law ‘Tungsten’ because of her toughness and resilience,” Nicholl said in her book.

As an example of Meghan’s strength and character, Nicholl recalled the Royal Foundation Forum in 2018 when she and Prince Harry showed up with Prince William and Kate Middleton.

“It was, according to one aide, the moment William and Kate, who was heavily pregnant, realized they needed to up their game,” Nicholl said. “The Cambridges had already signaled their intention to be more than ‘ornamental royals’ and had, along with Harry, made a huge success of their mental health campaign Heads Together. But Meghan was the breakout star of the foursome. She was polished, passionate, and funny, using all her TV-honed skills to present her case. That was a wake-up moment for William and Kate when they realized that Meghan was very impressive, very confident, and very capable, according to a source.”

In January 2020, Meghan and Harry stepped back from their royal duties. They’ve relocated to California where they’re focusing on starting a family and becoming financially independent. Not all the royals were thrilled about this change—including having their wax figures removed from Madame Tussauds, a London-based wax museum.

What are your thoughts on Markle’s nickname? Do you think she comes across as tough and resilient?
