Police officers are sworn to protect and serve. Without them, our world would be chaotic and much less safe.

They don’t always get the respect they deserve, but several individuals and businesses have stepped up to show that the men and women in blue have plenty of support.

The latest business to do so is a Kentucky Fried Chicken location in Gallipolis, Ohio. A simple sign is posted on the door of the Gallipolis KFC that reads: “All uniformed police officers eat free everyday all day.” Gallipolis is a small town of only 3,600 people, but a picture of the KFC sign has gone viral online.

The KFC location and the cops they are honoring have received a huge outpouring of support. Unfortunately, there’s also been some anger at those who feel the police don’t deserve free food or respect.

For officers in Gallipolis and around the country, what matters in this story is not necessarily the free chicken. It’s about being acknowledged. Officers put their lives on the line every day to protect others.

This gesture by KFC and the outpouring of positive responses lets officers know that they are recognized and appreciated. We see them, we acknowledge the risks they take, and we thank them for their service. Free chicken is the least that can be done.
