After announcing the winner for Best Writing in a Comedy Series, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel was dragged out on stage with actor Will Arnett to accept the award. After presenting the Emmy, Abbott Elementary writer Quinta Brunson lay on the floor like a passed-out drunk, jokingly commenting on his late-night program: “Congratulations on your Emmy. I missed it. How did it go?”

In America, however, many people were enraged with Kimmel for stealing Brunson’s thunder. She deserved to be recognized for producing such a amusing comedy series, but she didn’t get what she deserved because Kimmel was too drunk and unprofessional. He later apologized for “stealing” Brunson’s career highlight and said he never imagined his odd behavior would result in such a hostile reaction from the American public.

“That was a dumb comedy bit that we thought would be funny. I lost, and then I drank too much and then got dragged out on the stage,” Kimmel stated. “And then people got upset and said I stole your moment. Maybe I did, and I’m very sorry if I did do that. I’m sorry I did do that, actually, and also, the last thing I would ever want to do is upset you because I think so much of you. I hope you know that.”

Brunson was very understanding after the man apologized for interrupting her show and said that she was too happy about winning so many Emmy Awards to care about his foolish stunt. She told him that she had a great time at the awards ceremony and was overjoyed to have won an award for best comedy writer.

After stealing the moment from her, despite her deserving all the attention for her Emmy win, Kimmel apologized on Jimmy Kimmel Live. She later appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where she addressed the controversy and accepted Kimmel’s heartfelt apology for taking away their opportunity.

“Well, Jimmy, let me just say thank you,” Quinta Brunson stated. “It is very kind of you to say that. I honestly was in such a moment of having a good time, Like, I won my first Emmy! I was up there real happy, and I was wrapped up at the moment and was having a good time. I didn’t see that. I saw you, and I saw Will Arnett and my Emmy, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m having so much fun.’ Thank you so much, that’s kind, but honestly – I had a good night. It was a good night and a good time!”

During the show, Quinta took the stage with her Emmy Award and interrupted Kimmel during his monologue. However, on his own program, she was able to steal the limelight from him and commemorate her Emmy success again.

Jimmy stated: “You’re a little early for your interview.”

She stated: “Oh, I know, but I have a little favor to ask, actually. So you know how when you win an Emmy, you only have 45 seconds to make an acceptance speech? And then you get less time because someone does a dumb comedy bit that goes on a bit too long? Okay, so thank you – again – to the Academy for this amazing honor. I’d also like to thank Randall Einhorn, Michelle Nader, Big Andy, Margie, Aaron Warrenberg and, Channing Dungy, Persona PR, all of the fans of the show. And the Internet for raising me!”
