He found the courage to rescue the defenseless infant, who was unclothed and covered in fire ant bites. “As soon as I lifted him up, he stopped crying,” Jimmy shared. Determined to save this innocent life, he brought the baby boy, whom he later named Emilio Angel Jeremiah, back to his own mother in Haiti.
Though the odds were stacked against him, Jimmy made a life-altering decision – to become Emilio’s legal guardian, despite not knowing how he would provide for the child. As a student on a visa, Jimmy had to return to the United States, leaving Emilio in the care of his mother. Yet, the bond between Jimmy and Emilio only grew stronger through frequent video calls and shared moments of joy.
Jimmy’s love for Emilio led him to start the legal adoption process in 2019. However, the road to adoption proved to be a challenging and expensive one, with estimates suggesting it could take up to five years and cost over $31,000. Undeterred, Jimmy set up a GoFundMe campaign, hoping to give Emilio the loving home he deserved and secure their future together.
The response from the community was nothing short of extraordinary. In a heartwarming display of compassion, donations poured in, surpassing the initial goal by raising over $150,000. Jimmy’s gratitude overflowed as he shared his plans for the excess funds – not only to complete Emilio’s adoption but also to support local orphanages, impoverished families, and young people in the neighborhood.
