Sportmix is a well-known brand of dog food that has been linked to numerous animal fatalities. The FDA issued a recall notice for Sportmix pet food after it was discovered that high amounts of Aflatoxin were present in the canine meal, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 dogs. Dogs died from the food, but eight others became violently ill and survived the danger to their lives.

Because dog food was discovered to contain poisons that were harmful to dogs and cats, the following varieties of dog food were recalled in order to help avoid more dogs from dying. The Sportmix Energy Plus, Premium High Energy, and Original Cat lines were among them.

Midwestern Pet Food is the maker of Sportmix. They are desperate to retrieve their contaminated goods from consumers before any more dogs die due to the hazardous component.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture conducted tests on the dog food brand and discovered high levels of aflatoxin. Daily Mail explains that this toxin is produced by the Aspergillus flavus mold, which sometimes grows on corn and other grains used to make dog food.

Aflatoxin accumulation is a common problem for pets. Because they often eat the same food day after day, their bodies are unable to process and eliminate the toxin, leading to poisoning.

As a pet owner, it’s essential to be aware of the symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning. If your furry friend is displaying any loss of appetite, vomiting, sluggishness, jaundice, or diarrhea, these may be early signs that something is wrong. If left untreated these toxins can cause severe liver damage in pets.

If you have been feeding your pet Sportmix dog food, please contact your vet as soon as possible.

Fortunately, pet owners are not at risk of poisoning from simply handling the food. Although this was suggested by experts, hand washing should be done after handling pet food just in case future batches include another sort of hazardous poison.

Though it has not been decided yet, Sportmix may need to recall more types of pet food. If the FDA and the Missouri Department of Agriculture uncover more disastrous foods that could hurt pets, then the list of corrupted foods will grow larger.

Some pet owners have taken to social media to discuss whether or not this pet food led to their animal’s sudden death.

“I was getting my dog this dog food, and she passes away,” one wrote on Facebook.

Another person said that her Rottweiler “passed away three weeks ago just out of nowhere. He was a very healthy dog.”

More than one hundred individuals on Daily Mail began a discussion to talk about the hazardous dog food.

“This happened with Purina Beneful at one time as well. They paid on a class action suit and tried to keep it as hush as possible. Really sad because it isn’t something you should have to worry about, but it happens too often not to.”

One user suggested homemade dog food to avoid these problems.

“It’s really easy to make your own dog food and very much worth it. My dog lived until he was 19.”
