SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded over the weekend at Willard Bay State Park, where a Utah father drowned while heroically attempting to rescue his son amidst a sudden storm. The stormy weather turned what should have been a family outing into a devastating ordeal.
Andre Leon Debose, 38, from Layton, was enjoying a day on the water with his 17-year-old son when the weather took a turn for the worse around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The storm hit Willard Bay State Park near Eagle Beach, leading to dangerous conditions that claimed Debose’s life.
The distress began when a 19-year-old woman, who was swimming in the lake, started struggling in the turbulent waters. Debose’s son, demonstrating quick thinking and bravery, leaped into the lake to assist her. Thanks to the woman’s life jacket, she was safely brought back onto the boat. However, the situation rapidly deteriorated as Debose’s son began experiencing difficulties of his own.
Witnesses reported that in a desperate attempt to save his son, Debose jumped from the boat into the choppy waters. Both father and son were seen clinging to a single life jacket. Tragically, Debose went under and did not resurface, while his son managed to make it back to the boat.
Emergency crews launched an extensive search and were able to recover Debose’s body from the lake around 11:15 p.m. His son, who was evaluated by medical responders on the scene, was fortunately released with no injuries.
This incident marks the second drowning at Willard Bay State Park within a week, highlighting the pressing need for heightened safety measures. Park rangers are urging all visitors to prioritize safety as the recreation season continues. “Always recreate with a buddy, wear a life jacket, and remain aware of weather conditions,” rangers advised. “Ensure someone knows your location and expected return time.”
The tragic event underscores the unpredictable nature of outdoor activities, particularly when weather conditions can rapidly change. Despite the immense loss, Debose’s act of bravery serves as a powerful reminder of the risks taken by those who put others before themselves.
As summer unfolds, families and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to exercise caution and preparedness, especially in unpredictable weather. The sacrifice made by Andre Leon Debose, while deeply sorrowful, stands as a testament to the extraordinary lengths a parent will go to for the safety of their loved ones.
