One of the pastimes that many children enjoy is digging around a home looking for valuables.

Many adults enjoy this activity as well when using metal detectors find things. Some people and kids who dig around will uncover interesting items like old coins, cans or even ancient artifacts. It does not happen as often as most people would like. Two boys in 1978 decided to start digging around their California house looking for fun things that might have been buried by time. The family had just moved into the house.

The boys did not expect to find what they did.

The boys ended up digging in the front yard. They soon encountered something very large under the ground.

It was not a pipe or other piece of infrastructure. The parents of the boys decided to call the police. Authorities came out, assessed the situation and decided that it would be best to officially dig up whatever was in the soil. It turns out the boys discovered a buried automobile.

The car seemed to have been carefully wrapped in towels, paper and other materials to protect it from damage while buried. Closer examination showed the car to be a 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS in fair condition. This is a very expensive model of car.

Police did a little more research into the California home and the vehicle. It appears the previous vehicle owner attempted to commit insurance fraud and hired some people to dump the Ferrari into the ocean.

The criminals decided to bury the car instead with the dream of coming back later to claim it. The Ferrari was cleaned up and auctioned away to a mechanic who restored it. The recovered vehicle is on the roads today.
