Joe Turkel, who will always be remembered for his parts in Stanley Kubrick’s movies, has died at the age of 94. Joe passed away at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California, according to a representative for him. The following statement was provided by a rep for Joe:

“Joe was a lightning bolt and he was very passionate to talk about films, baseball and life. Every time we spoke he was quick to crack a bad joke and make me laugh.”

Turkel was born on July 15, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York City, and joined the US Army when he was 17. During World War II, Turkel served in the European Theater of Operations while in his teens. In 1948, he made his film debut in City Across the River. He would go on to appear in a number of films throughout the 1950s, including Lucky Losers, Man Crazy, and The Beast of Budapest.

While Joe had countless parts over four decades, his most recognizable might be as Lloyd the bartender in The Shining.

He played the lead in many horror films, including The Mummy’s Curse, Night of the Ghouls, Tormented, and Blood Wrath. He has also appeared in such motion pictures as Village of the Giants (both with Steve Railsback), The Boy and the Pirates (with James Karen), and Tormented. He also made numerous television appearances on shows such as The Andy Griffith Show (in several episodes), Miami Vice (twice), and The Lone Ranger.

Before dying, Turkel completed his memoir, The Misery of Success, which will be published later this year.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Annie Turkel, and Robert and Casilde Sesti, and his brother David Turkel; two grandchildren, Ben and Sarah.
