Vice President JD Vance didn’t mince words on Wednesday, going full throttle on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democrats for threatening a government shutdown over a budget fight that could cost Americans trillions — much of it earmarked for wasteful programs, including taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens.

Speaking outside the White House, Vance laid it out plainly: Democrats are holding the government — and the American people — hostage with absurd demands. “We just had a very frank conversation with the Senate and House Democratic leadership,” Vance said. “Look, the principle at stake here is very simple. We have disagreements about tax policy, but you don’t shut the government down. We have disagreements about healthcare policy, but you don’t shut the government down. You don’t use your policy disagreements as leverage to not pay our troops, to not have essential government services actually function. You don’t say the fact that you disagree about a particular tax provision is an excuse for shutting down the people’s government.”

Vance directly called out Schumer for the Democrats’ reckless approach. “If you look at what Chuck Schumer has said in the past, it’s always about negotiating, finding a bipartisan solution. But now they’re putting a gun to the American people’s head and saying, unless you do exactly what we want, we’re going to shut down the government. That’s exactly what they’re proposing.”

The Vice President didn’t stop there. He highlighted the radical spending priorities that Democrats are trying to shove through, including hundreds of billions of dollars for healthcare for illegal aliens while average Americans struggle to pay their own medical bills. “We thought it was absurd,” Vance said. “We told them it was absurd. And now they come in here saying, if you don’t give us everything we want, we’re going to shut down the government. Preposterous. Totally unacceptable. The American people are going to suffer because of this.”

President Trump echoed Vance’s condemnation on Truth Social, blasting Democrats for trying to ram through “over $1 trillion in new spending to continue free healthcare for illegal aliens, force taxpayers to fund transgender surgeries for minors, keep dead people on Medicaid rolls, and allow illegal alien criminals to steal billions of dollars in taxpayer benefits.” Trump called the Democrats’ radical agenda a clear example of why he won in a historic landslide, particularly in the seven swing states and the popular vote.

Trump added that Democrats are even targeting popular Republican-backed programs, like the $50 billion Rural and Vulnerable Hospital Fund, a lifeline for small-town hospitals that was passed with only Republican votes and proudly signed into law during his administration. “They haven’t figured out yet that there are consequences to losing elections,” he said.

As Vance and Trump make clear, this isn’t just a budget negotiation — it’s a battle for common-sense governance, the rule of law, and putting Americans first. With Democrats demanding trillions in spending for special interests while threatening to shut down government services, Republicans are drawing a line in the sand: America comes first.
