Democrats never miss an opportunity to embarrass themselves — and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) delivered another classic example this week. Appearing on MSNBC’s *The Last Word* with Lawrence O’Donnell, Jeffries came unglued over a harmless, obviously satirical video President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social. The video poked fun at Jeffries and fellow New Yorker Chuck Schumer, showing them whining about Trump while Jeffries wore a comically photoshopped sombrero.
Most Americans saw it for what it was: a joke. But for Democrats, humor is now “hate speech.”
Host Lawrence O’Donnell nearly fainted on air, calling the video “absolutely disgusting in every way.” He dramatically declared he wouldn’t even show it to his viewers, as if a parody meme were some kind of state secret. O’Donnell, who has built a career out of pearl-clutching over Trump, went on to accuse the former president of “lying” and demanded Jeffries respond.
Jeffries obliged — with a meltdown that showed just how out of touch the Democratic Party has become. He called the video “disgusting” and a display of “bigotry,” insisting that Trump was somehow weaponizing humor to divide the nation. “Bigotry will get you nowhere,” Jeffries huffed, apparently unaware that the only thing he accomplished was making Trump’s supporters laugh even harder.
Instead of shrugging off a silly meme like any adult would, Jeffries pivoted to fearmongering about Republican policy. He accused the GOP of launching an “assault” on healthcare simply for trying to rein in wasteful Medicaid spending and end benefits for illegal immigrants. According to Jeffries, Republicans are “closing our hospitals, nursing homes, and community-based health clinics” — a claim so over the top it bordered on parody itself.
In Jeffries’ telling, Trump and Republicans are hurting “everyday Americans” while supposedly showering “billionaire donors” with tax breaks. What he didn’t mention is that Democrats’ own policies have sent healthcare premiums through the roof, forced doctors out of private practice, and made it harder for working families to afford care. Republicans, meanwhile, have pushed for work requirements on able-bodied adults and limits on taxpayer-funded benefits for those who broke U.S. immigration law — commonsense reforms most Americans support.
But reality doesn’t fit the Democrats’ narrative, so Jeffries continued his performance, warning of “dramatically increased premiums, co-pays, and deductibles” unless Republicans agreed to extend Obamacare tax credits. In other words, more government handouts, more dependency, and more bureaucratic control.
The contrast could not be clearer. On one side, a president who posts a lighthearted meme to needle his political opponents and rally his base. On the other, Democrats like Jeffries who throw tantrums on cable news, labeling jokes “bigotry” while demanding more taxpayer money to fund their failing programs.
The meltdown over a photoshopped sombrero is more than just comic relief. It’s a reminder that today’s Democratic leadership has no sense of humor, no solutions for America’s problems, and no message beyond smearing Republicans as bigots. Trump got under their skin with a joke — and judging by Jeffries’ outburst, it worked perfectly.
