In a determined effort to tackle the escalating border crisis, Mexican government officials joined forces with bulldozer crews on Wednesday, December 27. Their mission: to dismantle and clear a sprawling migrant camp that had taken root along the US-Mexico border. Nestled near the town of Matamoros, Mexico, this camp had become a symbol of the challenges posed by mass migration into the United States.
As 2022 drew to a close, the camp, which had at times housed as many as 1,500 migrants, had grown into a sizeable settlement. Its occupants had embarked on the perilous journey, attempting to cross into Brownsville, Texas, a city neighboring Matamoros. Yet, by the time Mexican bulldozers swung into action, most of the migrants had already made their attempts to cross the border.
The removal of the camp stirred a frenzy of discussions, with opinions divided on the methods employed. AP journalist Valerie Gonzalez reported on Twitter, “Over the past few days, as the US and Mexico deliberated on immigration policies, an encampment in Matamoros, MX was cleared out—some claim forcibly—with machetes and bulldozers. One migrant father mentioned they had little notice, and many fled out of fear.”
In another tweet, Gonzalez shared a video of the bulldozers at work, stating, “This was the bulldozer in action, as filmed by a migrant. Workers, under MX immigration orders, tore down tents that INM claimed were empty. Migrants alleged that some were forcibly removed before their tents were destroyed. One father cried while recounting the fear his children felt that night.”
The timing of this operation coincided with a crucial meeting between Mexican government officials and a US delegation in Mexico City. The central goal was to address the surging wave of migrants streaming across the US-Mexico border. The Biden Administration issued a statement following the meeting, emphasizing their commitment to fostering “an orderly, humane, and regular migration.” This commitment includes addressing the root causes of migration, such as poverty, inequality, and violence, and expanding opportunities for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans.
Furthermore, the joint efforts aim to disrupt human smuggling, trafficking, and criminal networks while promoting legal migration pathways. Both delegations underscored the importance of facilitating vital bilateral trade at the shared border, highlighting its economic significance.
The statement also hinted at the possibility of extending residency or citizenship benefits to DACA migrants and other long-term undocumented immigrants residing in the United States.
