New York’s incoming mayor is already setting off alarm bells, and he hasn’t even taken office yet. In a stunning video posted to X, Democrat Socialist mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani essentially offered a tutorial to illegal immigrants on how to evade ICE, encouraging them to “stand up” to federal immigration agents and refuse cooperation — all while framing himself as the protector of “more than 3 million immigrants” in New York City, including the hundreds of thousands here illegally.
Mamdani recorded the video after an ICE operation in Chinatown was disrupted by activists who physically blocked officers from detaining suspects. Most leaders would’ve condemned mob interference with federal law enforcement. Mamdani decided to applaud it and double down.
“As mayor, I’ll protect the rights of every single New Yorker,” Mamdani declared. “That includes the more than 3 million immigrants who call this city their home.”

He then moved into what can only be described as an anti-ICE how-to guide. Standing in front of a “Know Your Rights” flip chart, he claimed ICE “cannot enter into private spaces” without a judicial warrant. Conveniently missing from his presentation was the fact that ICE agents are enforcing federal law, and persons in the country illegally do not have identical protections to citizens.
Worse, Mamdani told illegal immigrants that ICE officers “are legally allowed to lie to you,” but encouraged migrants to say “I do not consent” and repeatedly ask officers if they are “free to go.” He even instructed viewers on filming ICE officers — another tactic often used by far-left agitators to obstruct enforcement.

Rather than supporting the federal government’s job—to remove individuals who violated immigration law—the mayor-elect promised that New York would become a sanctuary protest zone. “New Yorkers have a constitutional right to protest,” he said. “And when I’m mayor, we will protect that right.”
Considering the city already has at least **412,000 illegal immigrants** according to its own 2022 statistics, many observers noted that Mamdani appears determined to turn New York into open defiance territory against federal law.

Conservatives immediately sounded the alarm. “Aiding abetting and advising criminals,” one user posted. Others called the video “a gift to the GOP,” noting that Mamdani was effectively telling illegal immigrants how to avoid deportation while ordinary Americans face the consequences of overcrowded shelters, soaring crime, and billions in migrant spending.

Even more astonishing is the timing. Mamdani and President Trump recently met at the White House, appearing surprisingly cordial. However, that goodwill appears to be collapsing fast. With the Trump administration aggressively enforcing immigration rules and ICE increasing operations in major sanctuary cities, Mamdani’s pledge to shield illegal immigrants sets the stage for a direct confrontation with Washington.
Last weekend’s raid, in which almost 200 protesters swarmed a parking garage and blocked ICE officers from leaving, is only a preview. With Mamdani promising to normalize resistance to enforcement, critics warn that New York is heading toward an unprecedented showdown between federal law and local left-wing politics—one in which the rule of law will be the first casualty.
