In a stunning twist of irony, the very law Democrats once weaponized against Trump’s national security adviser may now come back to bite one of their own.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) is under fire after making a clandestine visit to El Salvador on April 14, 2025, in a blatant attempt to pressure the Salvadoran government into releasing Kilmar Abrego Garcia—a deported El Salvadoran national who is reportedly linked to the notoriously violent MS-13 gang.
The kicker? His unsanctioned foreign engagement could be a violation of the Logan Act—a 1799 statute that criminalizes unauthorized negotiations by American citizens with foreign governments, especially in matters involving disputes with the United States. Sound familiar? That’s the exact law Democrats clung to when going after General Michael Flynn, accusing him of treason for daring to speak with foreign diplomats during the Trump transition.
Now, the tables have turned—and the silence from the left is deafening.
Conservative firebrand Roger Stone didn’t hold back. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he asked the obvious question: “Why hasn’t this U.S. Senator been arrested for violation of the Logan Act? It’s illegal to conduct your own foreign policy.”

Vince Conglianese, popular conservative radio host, joined in during his broadcast, calling out the blatant double standard. “This is what they accused General Flynn of doing—except Flynn was part of a duly elected incoming administration. Chris Van Hollen is just a rogue senator trying to negotiate with a foreign country on behalf of an alleged gang member. How is this not a violation?”
The hypocrisy couldn’t be clearer.
Even Fox News contributor Byron York, who previously argued that the Logan Act was outdated, acknowledged that the political optics were damning. “Politically, it’s useful to know that Sen. Van Hollen traveled to a foreign country to bash the President of the United States,” he said, highlighting how Van Hollen undermined U.S. immigration enforcement while abroad.
One X user, “Robert,” nailed it with this response: “Calling the Logan Act a dead letter makes sense—if it hadn’t been used to try and destroy General Flynn’s life. But once the left used it as a cudgel against Trump officials, it stopped being a relic and became a weapon. Now it’s their turn to face the consequences.”
And Van Hollen wasn’t acting alone.
According to The New York Times, a group of four Democratic House members followed Van Hollen’s lead and touched down in El Salvador on April 21, 2025—again, to plead the case of an alleged MS-13 member. Thankfully, Salvadoran officials refused to allow the Democrats to meet with Abrego Garcia. Perhaps El Salvador has more respect for U.S. immigration laws than the modern Democratic Party.
The bigger question: Where’s the media outrage now? Where are the congressional investigations? Where’s the DOJ?
When it’s a Republican like Flynn, the swamp mobilizes. But when it’s a Democrat fighting for an alleged gang member, suddenly the law goes quiet.
Once again, Democrats are exposed as the party of double standards—soft on crime, soft on borders, and more concerned about foreign criminals than the safety of American citizens.
