WNBA star Brittney Griner is once again making headlines — and not for her performance on the court. The Phoenix Mercury center is facing backlash after a Thursday night incident in which she appeared to direct a racially charged remark at Indiana Fever rookie and fan favorite Caitlin Clark.
After fouling out in a heated contest against the Fever, Griner was caught on camera visibly frustrated, muttering what many believe was “f—ing white girl” — presumably in reference to Clark, the NCAA standout who has helped revitalize public interest in women’s basketball.
The footage shows Griner saying “trash,” followed by the expletive and the contested phrase. While left-leaning media outlets and commentators rushed to claim she said “wack call” in reference to the referee’s decision, others aren’t convinced — including former NCAA swimmer and outspoken women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines.
“Brittney Griner appeared to call Caitlin Clark ‘trash’ and a ‘f—ing white girl’ after fouling out last night,” Gaines posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Just a reminder: this is who we traded for the Russian Merchant of Death. Now imagine if Clark had said the inverse.”

And that’s the real story here — the double standard. Had Clark used a racial term against Griner, there would be wall-to-wall coverage, sponsors pulling out, and calls for league suspension. But when the roles are reversed, the media narrative becomes damage control.
Enter Jemele Hill, a far-left commentator and former ESPN host, who quickly leapt to Griner’s defense — not by offering clarity, but by attacking the messenger. “I get that your whole personality is caught up in stuff like this, so you don’t care about spreading misinformation,” Hill snapped at Gaines, before insisting Griner had said “wack call,” despite the lack of clear audio evidence.
Whether or not Griner said “white girl,” her behavior in recent days has been anything but professional. During Saturday’s win over the Dallas Wings, she interrupted a postgame interview to scream at officials, “Be f—ing better.” This wasn’t a heat-of-the-moment reaction — it’s becoming a pattern.
It’s worth remembering: this is the same Brittney Griner whom the Biden administration bent over backward to bring home from a Russian prison — trading her for Viktor Bout, the convicted arms dealer nicknamed the “Merchant of Death.” That decision, already controversial, now looks even worse as Griner’s lack of gratitude and class continues to show on a national stage.
Griner may have the stats — averaging nearly 15 points and 8 rebounds per game — but it’s clear she lacks the poise and sportsmanship that someone in her position should exhibit. And if the WNBA is serious about growing its audience, especially with the influx of new fans thanks to stars like Clark, it might want to take a hard look at the kind of behavior it allows from its veterans.
Because the American public sees the double standard — and they’re getting tired of it.
