In a bold move that has riled up Washington, President Donald Trump’s former border czar, Tom Homan, recently announced that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) could soon face legal scrutiny. The investigation would center around her role in allegedly impeding the administration’s deportation efforts by offering guidance to illegal immigrants on how to avoid deportation.
For months, Homan has made it clear that any interference with ICE’s mission to detain and deport illegal aliens will not be tolerated. When it was revealed that Ocasio-Cortez hosted a webinar instructing illegal immigrants on how to evade Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homan didn’t hesitate to act. Speaking to Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Homan voiced his concerns about the legality of her actions, calling for an investigation into whether her actions constituted an illegal obstruction of law enforcement.
During the Fox interview, Ingraham presented the issue: “Tom, you’ve got AOC out there, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, congresswoman, putting out a webinar to help illegals avoid apprehension, giving tips about how to stay in the country and ultimately game the system.” Homan, visibly concerned, responded swiftly, saying he had already taken action by reaching out to the Deputy Attorney General, questioning whether Ocasio-Cortez’s actions violated federal law.
“I sent an email today to the Deputy Attorney General, at what level is that an impediment?” Homan asked, seeking clarity on whether her advice to illegal immigrants could be considered obstruction of federal law enforcement. While Homan admitted he was not a legal expert, he emphasized the importance of determining whether such actions crossed a legal line.
Homan reiterated the gravity of the situation, saying, “We’re working with the Department of Justice to figure out where that line is, and if AOC crossed it, then we’ll have to deal with it.” The former ICE Director made it clear that the Trump administration is taking these issues seriously. “If we have to take every federal dollar on the city with law, I mean, we’re done,” Homan added, suggesting that the administration was ready to take decisive action if needed.
In response to Homan’s interview, Ocasio-Cortez took to social media, mocking the former ICE director and downplaying the situation. “MaYbe shE’s goiNg to be in TroUble nOw,” she sarcastically wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Maybe he can learn to read. The Constitution would be a good place to start,” she added, dismissing the investigation as nothing more than a political attack.
However, conservatives were quick to fire back. Popular commentator Rogan O’Handley, also known as DC Draino, suggested that Ocasio-Cortez’s mocking tone could be a sign of fear over potential consequences. “Somebody sounds nervous,” he quipped in a tweet.
Others pushed back against Ocasio-Cortez’s dismissive response. One user pointed out, “Where in the Constitution does it say that as a U.S. Congresswoman, you have the right to teach people here illegally how to avoid ICE?” Another user made the legal case: “AOC is accused of teaching illegal immigrants how to evade ICE, a potential felony under 8 U.S. Code § 1324. Tom Homan, former ICE Director, sent a letter to the DOJ demanding an investigation. If true, this could carry serious legal consequences.”
The controversy surrounding Ocasio-Cortez’s actions is far from over. Homan’s call for a formal investigation could potentially lead to legal ramifications for the progressive congresswoman if it’s determined that her actions were more than just misguided advice. For now, it’s clear that conservatives are standing firm in their belief that no one—especially elected officials—should be allowed to subvert the rule of law when it comes to illegal immigration. If the investigation moves forward, it could mark the beginning of a long, drawn-out legal battle that may have serious repercussions for Ocasio-Cortez and her political allies.
