It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Melinda Dillon, an esteemed actress best known for her iconic roles in classic Hollywood films. Surrounded by family and friends, she left this world at 84 years old – her cause of death has been recently revealed.

On October 13, 1939 in Hope, Arkansas, the world was blessed with actress Dillon’s presence. In only a few short years after beginning her acting career in the mid-1960s she became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces and achieved illustrious fame by starring in films like “A Christmas Story” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.

“A Christmas Story”, a holiday flick released in 1983, has become a much-loved tradition for many families over the years. Dillon played Ralphie’s mother and did an excellent job that was applauded by both audiences and critics. In “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, she starred opposite Richard Dreyfuss as a woman who becomes involved with extraterrestrial life and plays a significant role in the story’s central conflict.

Beyond her remarkable film career, Dillon also had an illustrious stint in theater. She was featured in acclaimed Broadway performances of “A Delicate Balance” and “Absurd Person Singular,” as well as playing a recurring role on the beloved sitcom “The Bob Newhart Show.”

Dillon’s remarkable career garnered her several prestigious awards, such as an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actress in “Absent Minded Professor”.
