Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey is facing mounting criticism as residents increasingly question whether the Bay State’s immigration policies are putting illegal immigrants ahead of struggling American citizens — and at a staggering cost to taxpayers.

Once considered a haven for hardworking families seeking opportunity, Massachusetts is now becoming a cautionary tale, critics say, as soaring spending, public safety concerns, and an exodus of residents collide under Healey’s leadership.

At the center of the controversy is the state’s controversial “emergency shelter” system — a program originally designed to temporarily help Massachusetts families facing homelessness and financial hardship. But according to recent reports, the program has ballooned into a billion-dollar operation, with a substantial portion of taxpayer dollars going toward housing migrants and illegal immigrants.

In fiscal year 2025 alone, the shelter system reportedly surpassed the $1 billion mark — stunning many residents already struggling under high taxes, expensive housing, and an unforgiving cost of living.

Conservatives argue the priorities have become upside down.

“Massachusetts families were supposed to come first,” one local activist said. “Instead, taxpayers are footing the bill while struggling young people can’t afford to stay in the state.”

The controversy doesn’t stop at spending.

Healey’s refusal to cooperate fully with federal immigration enforcement has also drawn fierce criticism from conservatives and immigration hawks, who argue sanctuary-style policies are allowing dangerous criminals to remain on Massachusetts streets.

Federal immigration officials have repeatedly accused state leaders of failing to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in detaining violent offenders.

One case that sparked outrage involved an illegal immigrant from India, identified as Dhaval Amratbhai Patel, who ICE arrested in May 2026 after local authorities reportedly released him following allegations of assault with a dangerous weapon. Patel had allegedly attacked another individual with a baseball bat during an altercation.

Federal officials did not mince words.

“This illegal alien thought he could violently attack someone and still walk free,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement. “Sanctuary politicians are making communities less safe by refusing to cooperate with immigration enforcement.”

ICE officials have repeatedly highlighted arrests involving gang members, drug traffickers, and violent offenders in Massachusetts, often noting that federal agents acted without meaningful cooperation from state or local authorities.

During a large-scale enforcement operation in October 2025, ICE reportedly arrested more than 1,400 criminal illegal immigrants in Massachusetts — numbers conservatives say directly contradict Healey’s repeated claims that immigration crackdowns unfairly target otherwise law-abiding individuals.

Meanwhile, critics say public frustration is growing over allegations of waste and fraud under Healey’s administration.

Massachusetts Republican Party Chairwoman Amy Carnevale recently blasted the governor for what she described as silence surrounding multiple fraud scandals totaling more than $25 million in taxpayer losses.

“It is beyond irresponsible,” Carnevale said, “for leadership to ignore repeated examples of fraud while taxpayers are expected to keep paying more.”

The growing dissatisfaction may already be showing up in migration trends.

Massachusetts reportedly lost more than 33,000 residents to other states between mid-2024 and mid-2025, with younger Americans among those leaving in large numbers. Rising housing costs, taxes, and concerns about public priorities are frequently cited reasons.

For critics of Healey’s agenda, the message is simple: when government spends billions accommodating illegal immigration while young families pack up and leave, something has gone seriously wrong.

And for many Bay State residents, the question is becoming harder to ignore: who exactly is Massachusetts government working for?
