Former President Barack Obama found himself at the center of a social media firestorm this week after posting an over-the-top tribute to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who announced she will be retiring after nearly four decades in Congress.
Obama’s message was filled with glowing praise that sounded more like satire than sincerity. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), the former president declared that Pelosi “will go down in history as one of the best speakers the House of Representatives has ever had” and that she “made us proud to be Democrats.”
For many Americans, those comments were like nails on a chalkboard — considering Pelosi’s legacy of hyper-partisanship, corruption, and left-wing authoritarianism.
Obama began his post with his usual lofty tone, writing, “For almost four decades, Nancy Pelosi has served the American people and worked to make our country better.” He went on to credit Pelosi for her “skill at bringing people together” and for pushing through major legislation — most notably, the disastrous Affordable Care Act, which gutted the private healthcare market and sent insurance premiums through the roof.
“She made us proud to be Democrats,” Obama added. “And will go down in history as one of the best speakers the House of Representatives has ever had.” He closed by personally thanking Pelosi, saying, “Nancy, thank you for your leadership and your friendship. Michelle and I wish you and Paul the best in this next chapter.”
If Obama expected applause, what he got instead was a blistering backlash. Americans flooded the comments with reminders of Pelosi’s real record: skyrocketing debt, open borders, insider trading scandals, and decades of self-enrichment while her constituents in San Francisco live amid filth, drugs, and crime.
Cherie Currie, former lead singer of The Runaways, unleashed one of the sharpest responses. “You and Nancy have destroyed my state,” Currie wrote. “How you can boast about anything ‘California’? It sickens me.” She added, “Your face on the ‘YES ON 50’ commercials made me see YOU CARE NOT for Americans that don’t fall in line with your horrendous Democratic Party. I VOTED FOR YOU in 2008. You’re a disgrace.”
One commenter summed it up perfectly: “You are both creeps.” Another blasted the pair for their role in forcing Obamacare on the country, saying, “The ‘Affordable Care Act’ is neither affordable nor workable. It destroyed a formerly great healthcare system. What a disaster your presidency was — and how it totally divided America.”
Even actor John Schneider, best known for The Dukes of Hazzard and Smallville, chimed in with a brutal truth bomb. “Wait… served who?” Schneider wrote. “Last time I checked, it’s only her bank account that’s gotten bigger since she came into office. Wait, my assistant just came to me and gave me these other figures… You’ve actually gotten richer than she has being a ‘public servant.’ Just how do you explain that?”
While Obama tried to paint Pelosi as a selfless public servant, ordinary Americans see her for what she truly is — a career politician who got rich off the backs of taxpayers, used her power to divide the country, and left behind a trail of corruption and chaos.
Obama’s fawning eulogy may have impressed the D.C. elite, but for the rest of America, it was just another reminder of why Democrats like Pelosi and Obama broke the very system they claim to serve.
