On Saturday, the Carter Center declared that former President Jimmy Carter has chosen to receive hospice care in his home of Plains, Georgia “instead of additional medical intervention”.
After a “series of short hospital stays,” the 98-year-old made the decision, the center stated. “He has the full support of his family and his medical team.”
Grandson Jason Carter expressed that his beloved grandpa and Rosalynn, who had shared an incredible 76 years of marriage together, were in a tranquil state.
“I saw both of my grandparents yesterday,” Jason Carter wrote on Twitter. “They are at peace and — as always —their home is full of love.”
After completing a tumultuous single term that concluded in 1981, the former president has been grappling with serious health issues in recent years.
In August 2015, Carter underwent a procedure to excise a tumor from his liver. He subsequently called for a press conference where he revealed that the doctors had identified melanoma in four locations on his brain.
“I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes,” he stated, adding that he had “a wonderful life.”
Following a few months of medical care, Carter’s physicians announced that he had officially recovered from cancer. Unfortunately in 2019, the young boy was hospitalized again after an unfortunate domestic incident where he fractured his pelvis.
On October 1st, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr. was born in Plains to a grocer and a nurse. After graduating from the US Naval Academy, he became Governor of Georgia before eventually being swept into the White House in 1976 due to widespread public disapproval of Washington’s political establishment stemming from Watergate.
The economic recession, as well as foreign policy issues- particularly the 1979 Iran hostage crisis when dissidents stormed and occupied the US Embassy in Tehran for 444 days – put a damper on Carter’s reelection chances. Ultimately, Ronald Reagan of the Republican party soundly defeated him in 1980.
In recent decades, President Carter has devoted his time to charity work such as Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Presidential Center which focuses on human rights. His commendable efforts were recognized with a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
