However, expired potatoes have a toxin that can be harmful to humans. That is why if your potato has turned green, then you will need to throw it out immediately.

one famous case leads back to 1970, in London. Without warning, almost 80 young students fell violently ill at the same time. Their symptoms ranged from diarrhea to vomiting, some kids ever saw depression of the central nervous system. It got so bad that some kids were sent to a comatose estate.

The authorities were called in to see if they could pinpoint the issue. It didn’t take long for them to figure out what had happened. Someone served them old potatoes which poisoned them.

Certain foods that are left out to long, form a toxin called Solanine. The telltale sign of this toxin in the skin of a potato turning green. In rare cases, consuming a green potato can cause death. So it’s nothing to take lightly.

Potatoes aren’t the only thing people shrug off as non-lethal and risk eating anyway if possibly old.

Moldy bread is something else that you will need to throw away. Moldy bread can do more than just give you an upset stomach. It can increase the risk of cancer.

You also want to avoid eating raw eggs. You put yourself at risk for eating salmonella. If you are unable to separate the yolk from the egg white, then it has gone bad. Many people think that canned goods will last forever.

However, they can spoil. That is why you should check the expiration date before you eat anything out of a can. Expired canned food can cause botulism. A wilted cucumber is something else that you will need to throw away. When the cucumber decomposes, it produces a chemical that can harm the intestinal lining.
