An 11-year old student was detained for not saluting the flag at a school in Lakeland. The student at Lawton Chiles Middle Academy had rejected saluting the American flag because he said it symbolized bigotry against black people, according to his substitute teacher in a written report that she’s given to the district.
“Why won’t you go and live somewhere else to live since you’re so unhappy here”, she wrote. Then the boy reportedly replied, “I’m here not by choice.” “Well, I’m from Cuba and the day I feel I’m not welcome here anymore, I’m leaving, then I phoned the office because I didn’t want to go back and forth with him any longer.”
Police were notified by the office when the student became hostile with the principal and the school security. Dhakira Talbot, the boy’s mother, said. “I’m full of disbelief and emotions about everything that is happening to my son because this should have never gone this far!”
