Chris Heider is a bit of a handy man, and he recently created a state of the art platform bed out of Ikea kitchen cabinets. At first, the project seemed a bit odd to some people, but his incredible creation has gone viral.

A platform bed is great for storing clothing, and other items in the bed frame’s removable drawers. A standard platform bed can cost nearly $1000 at stores like Macy’s and JC Penny. However, Chris Heider’s platform bed cost him less than $500 to build.

He used seven Ikea cabinets as material, and he also purchased some wood framing from a hardware store. In total, he spent $480 on the project. When he began building his new bed, he was a bit worried that it wouldn’t be strong enough. However, he reinforced the platform’s steps and areas that were prone to sagging.

Heider built-in several custom features during the construction of his bed frame. Extra cabinet space and larger steps were among the most important features that he wanted his new bad to have. After he was finally done constructing his new platform bed, he decided to test it out. Three larger adults and two dogs crawled into the bed. Amazingly, the bed was more than strong enough to handle the heavy weight.

Chris Heider posted a tutorial video on social media in order for people to learn how to build their own platform bed. Heider says that it’s not that difficult of a process, but there is one necessary step that must be taken. In order for the bed to be strong and reliable, you must fasten the frame of the bed to a wall for extra stability.
