Before you leave your home when a hurricane is approaching, there are a few things that you might do, such as board the windows or make sure outside belongings are put away.

A social media post from someone preparing to leave home before Hurricane Matthew hit is now circulating on the internet. Matthew was one of the largest storms to hit the east coast in a few years. Sheila Russell lives in Lumberton, NC, and posted a helpful tip for those in the way of the hurricane. Before leaving the home, you put a cup of water in the freezer.

Once the water is frozen, put a quarter on top of the ice.

When you get back home, look at the cup of water. If the quarter is still on top of the ice and not floating, then you know that the food in the freezer is good.

However, if the quarter is at the bottom of the cup, then you know that the food has thawed out and should be disposed of for the safety of the family. A quarter that is in the middle of the cup usually means that the food is alright, but you either need to eat it quickly, or you need to make sure the food is frozen immediately.
