When officers arrived on the scene of a horrific crash near Filmore, Utah, all they knew at first is that one of the drivers had been driving down the interstate the wrong way.

All kinds of things can cause car accidents. Sometimes it’s just a fluke. Sometimes a crash is the result of bad road conditions due to weather.

Sometimes it’s due to distracted driving like when the driver is texting. But when a driver is roaring down the interstate in the wrong direction, there is often something else going on.

When officers looked under the seat of the wrecked Jeep Grand Cherokee, they found the root cause of the crash.

A bottle of alcohol under the seat made clear that the driver of the Jeep had been drunk. The drunk driver was Jessie N. Wilkerson, 18.

She died as the result of her choices that night, and took 27-year-old Kaela Hernandez and 25-year-old Larry J. Martin with her. The only survivor the accident was 29-year-old Joseph C. Martin.

The three innocent occupants were on their way to a business convention when the crash occurred. A horrible tragedy like this doesn’t have many takeaways. It is a good reminder, though, to never drink and drive. There are more lives than your own at stake.

It’s also a reminder to wear your seat belt. Perhaps most importantly, it’s a reminder to live every moment like it’s your last. You never know when something completely out of your control could change everything.
