A woman who was brutally attacked and left for dead has awoken from her coma and named her brother as the accused attacker. The 51-year-old West Virginian claims that it was her brother who came to her home near Cottageville, West Virginia in June 2020 and tried to kill her.
Wanda Palmer was found barely alive in her home in June 2020. A tragedy like this creates shockwaves that can be felt throughout a close-knit community.
The police found her sitting upright on her couch with severe head trauma and other injuries. The weapon was not found at the scene. A statement posted on Facebook by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department says that she was “attacked, hacked, and left for dead.”
When the officers arrived at the scene, they found Palmer on the verge of death. Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger said that they initially assumed she had already vanished, but noted that she was still breathing shallowly.
Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger said: “I wouldn’t have wagered a nickel for her life that morning. She was in that bad of shape. And, quite honestly, she was unconscious, circling the drain medically. Massive, massive amounts of head trauma. You know, consistent with some sort of a machete or hatchet type injury.”
Even though a witness reported seeing Daniel Palmer on his sister’s porch the night before she was found dead, no charges were filed. According to the sheriff, there was no evidence such as phone records, video surveillance, or other eyewitnesses to corroborate the claim.
Since Wanda Palmer had been hospitalized since the assault, investigators were at a loss as to why she was there.
Officials have executed search warrants and conducted searches to determine suspects, generate leads, and gather information. Sheriff Mellinger stated that Wanda Palmer and her brother, Daniel Palmer, 55, had been violent in the past; however, there is no evidence currently to support this claim.
What happened next was truly amazing…
Wanda Palmer’s nursing home contacted the police to report that she was awake and had regained the ability to communicate. According to a deputy, she accused her brother of harming her. Although she could not speak yet, she was able answer questions with a yes or no response. This information allowed the police connect the dots and eventually arrest Palmer’s brother.
Mellinger stated, “For her to be able to wake up and say, you know, give the name, thank God. That’s all I can say. Thank God, because she definitely deserves justice. Definitely.”
Later on, Sheriff Mellinger told CNN that Daniel Palmer was arrested and charged with attempted murder as well as malicious wounding. According to the sheriff, he was arraigned and issued a $500,000 bond. It remains unclear how he pleaded during this process.
According to the police, Wanda Palmer has been fully awake ever since then and is sane. She is nevertheless unable to withstand a full discussion. Fortunately, she awoke from her 2-year coma to seek justice for what had happened to her.
