What would you do if you came across an alien? When villagers in Borneo ran into a creature in the woods that looked like it could only be an extraterrestrial, they reacted by violenting attacking it.
The shock and fear the villagers felt at seeing the creature was understandable because it truly looked unlike anything they had ever seen. Sadly, the presumed alien was actually a severely malnourished sun bear.
The sun bear is a protected species in Borneo, and when healthy, it looks like other kinds of bears with the exception of a pale crescent-shaped patch of fur on the breast.
This young, malnourished sun bear was unrecognizable. It was completely hairless and down to skin and bones.Despite the violent attack from the terrified villagers, the sick sun bear survived and was able to escape.
Malaysian authorities confirmed that the creature was a sun bear after seeing a video of it escaping. Months later, the poor “alien” was found and was given some much-needed care at the Matang Wildlife Center. Although the bear is still sick, it continues to get stronger.
It still has a long way to go, but it has improved to the point where it would hard for anyone to mistake it for an alien. Hopefully, the bear will one day be released back into the wild.
