Footage of a Canadian driver speeding past a school bus and almost hitting a young girl is now going viral. This event was captured on home security camera in Pickering, Ontario, at the intersection of Whites Road and Shepard Avenue. The 10-year old girl, named Rebecca Hiller, was chatting with a friend while a larger group of children crossed the street. Apparently the driver thought that all the kids had passed, since the bus driver took down the official stop sign. When Hiller realized she should have crossed the street with the other children, the bus driver signaled to the girl saying it was still ok to cross. As you can see in the video, however, once Hiller runs across the street it was anything but safe. If that black car that came speeding through had been just a few centimeters closer, Hiller would probably have been killed.

Hiller told reporters that she actually felt the car graze her back as it passed. She is still scarred by the incident. Her mother is hoping that by spreading this video online more people will realize the importance of paying extra attention around school buses. This short video has now reached over 3 million views on a various websites.

When the local police in Pickering reviewed this tape, they said three major things went wrong here. First, the driver should have slowed down. Second, the bus driver shouldnt have waved Hiller on after taking down the stop sign. And, third, Hiller should have stopped to look both ways before bolting across the street. Although these three things went wrong, nothing officially illegal occurred in this video, and charges cannot be leveled against the drivers. This video should serve as a reminder for all of us to be extra precautions around school buses. Plus, this video should be used to teach all children about the importance of looking left and right before crossing the street.
