In a new interview, Val Kilmer opened up about recovering from throat cancer and losing his famous voice. “I’ve had a lot of support,” the 57-year-old actor said during an appearance on the podcast The Ross Baker Experience . “My friends have been wonderful and my wife has been beyond belief supportive.” In 2015, Kilmer revealed to fans that he battled with stage one throat cancer. He later took to Facebook to clarify his diagnosis as a “complicated” form called tongue cancer after news broke that he was suffering from oral cancer .
Despite being treated for two different types of cancers, Kilmer is now revealing that they are both gone. However, the Batman Forever star still struggles with losing his famous voice.
“I wish I could talk more normally,” he said. “And I don’t know what to say about it other than that I understand my voice is not what it was and I’m perfectly happy with it, but I’d like to sound like myself.”
Kilmer has since retired from acting. He famously battled throat cancer in 2013 after being misdiagnosed by doctors who found a tumor on his lungs instead of his vocal chords. As a result, he lost 40 pounds within the year because he couldn’t eat due to having trouble swallowing.
Despite losing most of his voice, Kilmer began performing one-man shows again which consist of him wearing no shoes while reciting poetry and prose . The actor attributes finding beauty through words as a way to cope with anxiety and stress.
“I have a strange old voice, but I like it,” Kilmer said. “I’m OK with it.”
