The Democrats are at it again—this time, it was Representative John Larson of Connecticut who had a complete meltdown during a House Ways and Means Committee hearing on March 12. His tantrum erupted when Republicans refused to indulge in yet another political circus act by blocking his desperate attempt to haul Elon Musk in for testimony.
Larson, along with his Democrat allies, has been peddling the absurd claim that Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are plotting to dismantle Social Security and other entitlement programs. The reality? Musk has been tasked with rooting out fraud and waste that are bleeding these programs dry—something Democrats apparently have no interest in fixing.
But instead of engaging in a rational discussion, Larson decided to throw a fit. Red-faced and seething, he ranted, “We’re an equal branch of government, and you start off with a blather, and yet, look at the empty seats here. Where’s Elon Musk? I’m sure he’s a genius and is a very credible person because of the wealth he’s accumulated, but that does not put him above the law or the responsibility to come before this committee in this Congress.”
Translation: Larson is upset that Republicans refused to turn the hearing into a kangaroo court for yet another Democrat-led smear campaign.
As he pounded his fists and raised his voice, Larson accused Musk of trying to privatize Social Security, claiming, “If he’s so great, if these plans and all the fraud and abuse that he found are so imminent, why isn’t he here explaining it? You know why? Because he’s out to privatize Social Security. He’s been on television the last couple of days talking exactly about Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and what he intends to do, privatize it!”
Of course, this is a deliberate mischaracterization of Musk’s efforts to expose the rampant inefficiency and corruption plaguing these programs. But rather than address the actual problem, Larson and the Democrats resort to their usual playbook—fear-mongering and hysteria.
Larson continued his unhinged tirade, screeching, “Ask that of the people in your district. Ask that, Mister Smith of the more than 198,000 people in your district who rely on Social Security and you won’t even let the person who’s planning to privatize it, who’s telling the big lie in front of everyone in bold as he possibly can, saying, This is what we’re going to do.”
What Larson conveniently ignores is that Musk’s goal is to protect Social Security for future generations by eliminating the waste and abuse that have made the program unsustainable. But the Democrats need that fraud and mismanagement to keep their bloated welfare state alive.
Larson, apparently running out of steam, then spiraled into a bizarre rant about the Constitution and the American Revolution. “It’s why these revolutions were first adopted back in 1789, because the founding fathers knew that the executive branch does not have total authority over the legislature unless you have a willing party that says, No, we’re going to do exactly what you tell us to do!”
This was nothing more than a dramatic performance by a desperate Democrat clinging to outdated talking points. The real story here is that Republicans refused to let this committee become a stage for Democrat grandstanding. Rather than indulge another leftist attack on a private citizen who is actually working to fix government corruption, the GOP is standing firm.
Larson’s final exhausted cries of “Shame! Shame!” were nothing more than a last-ditch attempt to save face. But the American people see through it. The real shame is that Democrats would rather stage theatrical outrage than address real problems. Thankfully, Republicans aren’t playing along.
