After years of using her office to wage political warfare against President Donald Trump, New York Attorney General Letitia James is finally facing a reckoning. In a bombshell announcement that has sent shockwaves through political and legal circles, U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III confirmed that the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York have launched a criminal investigation into James for alleged mortgage fraud.
The investigation, now in the hands of the Department of Justice and the Albany FBI field office, stems from a criminal referral issued last month by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte. According to the referral, James may have committed mortgage fraud by falsifying key information related to her personal residence and her husband, allegedly in an effort to obtain favorable loan terms.
“This is being handled by main Justice and the Albany FBI field office,” Sarcone told the *Albany Times Union*, underscoring that the DOJ is prepared to act as evidence emerges. “We stand prepared to act in the capacity that we need to when and if we are informed there’s a charge to be made.”
But Sarcone didn’t stop there. In a pointed contrast to James’ blatant political grandstanding during her crusade against President Trump, he emphasized the professionalism of his office, saying, “Unlike Letitia James, who unethically ran around the state campaigning on getting Donald Trump… my office conducts itself in a manner that is proper and professional.”
That contrast couldn’t be more clear. James ran for office on a promise to “get Trump,” weaponizing her position to lead politically motivated prosecutions. She launched a civil fraud case against the former president—one that legal scholars and conservative lawmakers widely condemned as a partisan hit job.
Now, the tables may finally be turning.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), a fierce defender of Trump and a leading voice against political weaponization of the justice system, applauded the FBI investigation. “Nobody is above the law,” Stefanik said. “These serious allegations—falsifying records to secure favorable loan terms on properties in Virginia and New York—threaten public trust in our institutions.”
She didn’t mince words: “The hypocrisy is staggering. Tish James allegedly committed the same crime that she falsely and illegally prosecuted President Donald Trump for.”
Stefanik also reminded Americans that she had already filed a bar complaint against James in February, citing over 50 prejudicial social media posts from James during the first weeks of Trump’s civil fraud trial. Her conduct, Stefanik argued, shredded any notion of impartial justice and exposed the raw political motives behind her legal crusades.
“Tish James’ actions embody the corruption among NY elected Democrats led by Kathy Hochul,” Stefanik said. “This abuse of power is an insult to New Yorkers already struggling with high taxes. The investigation into Letitia James is a vital step toward justice.”
For millions of Americans who’ve watched the two-tiered justice system go after Trump with reckless abandon while Democrats skate by untouched, this investigation represents something long overdue: accountability.
And maybe, just maybe, the beginning of the end of lawfare as a tool for political vengeance.
Stay tuned.
