Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) is in a precarious position as he faces mounting doubts about his ability to retain his Senate seat. A recent poll shows nearly half of Pittsburgh Democrats now view Fetterman unfavorably, a stark contrast to the 13% unfavorable rating of Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro. For a politician already battling personal health struggles, these numbers are particularly troubling and could spell disaster for his re-election chances.
Fetterman’s health issues have long been a point of contention since he suffered a stroke during his 2022 campaign. The stroke affected his speech and hearing, and concerns about his physical and mental well-being continue to dog him. A recent piece in *New York Magazine* shed light on growing unease among his staff, underscoring the concerns that his health may be deteriorating further. For many Democrats, these ongoing issues are a fatal blow to his political future. One anonymous insider, speaking candidly about the situation, said, “In Pittsburgh, this is a break-glass, freak-out moment for Fetterman,” referring to the latest dismal polling numbers.

Despite the bleak outlook, Fetterman still has defenders within his party. U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) vehemently rejected the growing criticism, claiming that the attack on Fetterman was politically motivated. “The only reason for the coordinated campaign against Senator John Fetterman is his unapologetic pro-Israel politics,” Torres wrote on X, a platform formerly known as Twitter. “Let’s call it what it is.”
Torres continued, defending Fetterman’s mental health, saying, “As someone who has struggled with depression my whole adult life, I can tell you that if you truly care about someone’s mental health, leaking hit pieces against them is a strange way of showing it.” However, as Fetterman’s approval ratings continue to slide, even some in his own party appear to be distancing themselves from him.
In an unexpected twist, Republican Senate hopeful Dave McCormick has publicly come to Fetterman’s defense. McCormick called for an end to the “vicious, personal attacks” against Fetterman, his family, and his health. While acknowledging their policy differences, McCormick emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation in Pennsylvania, saying, “We are both committed to working together to achieve results for the people of Pennsylvania and make their lives better.”
But Fetterman, who has seemed increasingly disillusioned by the Democratic Party’s treatment of him, has also grown closer to President Donald Trump, whose policies he has surprisingly praised. Fetterman, responding to what he sees as an unhinged attack from the left, stated, “A sad cavalcade of self-owns and unhinged petulance. It only makes Trump look more presidential and restrained. We’re becoming the metaphorical car alarms that nobody pays attention to—and it may not be the winning message.”
In another striking moment, Fetterman echoed Trump’s tough stance on the Middle East, specifically the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Fetterman, a Democrat with Palestinian heritage, declared his full support for Trump’s call to “free all the hostages or start killing Hamas members again,” aligning himself with the former president’s aggressive position. Trump, in his trademark blunt style, vowed to make Hamas pay for their actions, declaring, “Only sick and twisted people keep bodies, and you are sick and twisted!”
Fetterman’s support for Trump’s policies on the Middle East, alongside his mounting health concerns, is only deepening the divide within his party. His once-promising political career now appears to be a ticking time bomb, with Democrats growing increasingly uncertain about whether he can hold on to his Senate seat in 2024. As tensions rise, Fetterman’s future in the Senate grows more uncertain by the day, and his party’s prospects may be in jeopardy.
