Democrats love to lecture America about the supposed “authoritarianism” of President Donald Trump. Yet, when they think the cameras aren’t watching too closely, they often admit their own plans sound far closer to authoritarian rule than anything Trump has ever proposed. Case in point: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who revealed on CNN that Democrats fully intend to weaponize the Department of Justice against Trump’s allies if they manage to claw back power.
Appearing on *The Situation Room* with Wolf Blitzer on September 22, Jeffries unleashed a tirade over President Trump’s decision to replace a weak, go-along-to-get-along U.S. Attorney in Virginia with someone who actually shared the administration’s priorities. The move, which came after Attorney General Pam Bondi was urged to take action, was painted by Democrats as scandalous. In reality, it was Trump doing what any president is entitled to do—putting people in office who will enforce the law and not bend the knee to the permanent Washington establishment.
Blitzer, as expected, played into the Democrats’ narrative. He asked Jeffries whether the reshuffle showed a lack of DOJ “independence” and if House Democrats would intervene. Jeffries wasted no time confirming what many conservatives have warned for years: Democrats see the DOJ not as a neutral agency, but as a political hammer to smash their opponents.
“There’s absolutely a role for House Democrats,” Jeffries boasted, pointing to Rep. Jamie Raskin as the one who would lead the charge. He then vowed to “secure all of the documents” and ensure Trump officials are “held accountable.” Translation: prepare for years of taxpayer-funded witch hunts designed to punish political enemies.
Jeffries didn’t stop there. He chillingly reminded viewers that the statute of limitations on certain charges extends five years—hinting that Democrats plan to come after Trump officials even long after the administration ends in 2029. “Donald Trump and this toxic administration will be long gone,” he warned, “but there will still be accountability to be had.” In other words, Democrats are openly promising retribution.
And in case anyone doubted his vision of a politicized justice system, Jeffries made clear he believes the DOJ should operate under Democratic control. Calling the agency “one of the great institutions in law enforcement,” he implied it isn’t truly “independent” until Democrats run the show. That statement should send a shiver down the spine of every American who values equal justice under the law.
Jeffries capped off his rant with an attack on the conservative Supreme Court, blasting its rulings on presidential immunity and accusing justices of enabling Trump to “behave just like a king.” He even hinted that Democrats might “reverse” Supreme Court decisions they don’t like—a threat that sounds uncomfortably close to undermining judicial independence altogether.
The picture couldn’t be clearer: while Democrats rail against Trump for allegedly eroding democratic norms, it’s their own leaders who are openly plotting to weaponize the courts, the DOJ, and even the Supreme Court to settle political scores. If voters needed another reminder of why Democrats cannot be trusted with unchecked power, Hakeem Jeffries just delivered it.
