For decades, Joy Behar has been a household name. She made her television debut on The View in 1997 when the program first aired. As one of the show’s initial hosts, Behar has a lot of authority on the program and knows how to use it to get what she wants, including a golden parachute when her time comes. During her seven years on The View, Behar has no problem expressing her opinions about her husband, Steve Janowitz – but there’s a hidden history between them that just came to light.
Janowitz and Behar first met in an extremely unusual circumstance. While people meet online today and others still meet at the coffee shop, Janowitz initially saw her soon-to-be spouse while he was strutting around at a nudist colony, showing off his stuff.
According to Behar, she was inspired by Janowitz’s article in the magazine and went up to him at the nudist colony. The pair began dating in 1982. She had recently split from her present spouse, Joy Behar, to who she had been married to from 1965 until 1981. Behar found himself unable to look away from Janowitz, especially because he knew what he was packing.
For the past 29 years, Behar and Janowitz were dating. They did not marry and kept things casual as they had planned. Despite Janowitz’s desire to marry Behar, a retired teacher, she was playing hard to get. She called it quits with him in 2009.
She said she was having second thoughts and didn’t know what to do.
“Actually, I got cold feet again, so I don’t know what I’m going to do. It’s off the table. What’ll happen is, when I decide to do it, I’ll do it, and then everybody will know I did it. I can’t make up my mind.”
Behar shared that she delayed tying the knot with Janowitz as long as possible because she didn’t want to be a daughter-in-law again.
“I waited until all the parents were dead. So I have no in-laws at all. He has none, and I have none. Because marriage is mostly about in-laws, I find. They always want you to visit them and come for lasagna.”
Since then, Behar and Janowitz have been married for ten years. Since Behar first noticed her soul mate at a nudist colony, they’ve experienced a lot of changes in their lives and relationship. They enjoy spending quiet evenings at home now that they’ve tasted the finest each has to offer, catching up on Hoarders and other reality television shows.
It may have taken Behar nearly three decades to make the decision to marry her ideal guy, but now that she has, her life is exactly as she imagined it would be. Not every Hollywood celebrity can claim to have their romantic existence just the way they want it.
