Prom night is perhaps the most significant event in high school for both boys and girls. For males, not as eventful, but for females, it’s a night to remember. They spend weeks or months planning their prom outfits. Aside from the appearance, they make sure they have the correct dress for prom. And this teen’s dress undoubtedly made everyone proud.
Aubrey Headon is a student at Rochelle Township High School in Rochelle, Illinois. For others, the formal gown is only a way to enhance their appearance. But for Aubrey, the dress has a deeper meaning.
After meeting Gretchen Catherwood, the Gold Star mother of a fallen Marine in the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, this came about. Gretchen created the Darkhorse Lodge after her son’s funeral to assist veterans to cope with their loss. Aubrey said, “She started the Darkhorse Lodge to help combat veterans. I do a fundraiser every year to donate to the lodge.” The Darkhorse Lodge is a project aimed at establishing “a peaceful atmosphere for combat veterans to enjoy rest, relaxation, and recreation.”
Since meeting Gretchen, Aubrey has been actively involved in the cause. She produced t-shirts and other goods to sell in order to raise money for the five visiting cabins as well as additional quarters so that the retreat may be created. Last October, Aubrey was able to deliver a check for $2,133 to Darkhorse founders Gretchen and her spouse Kirk.
Gretchen’s story motivated Aubrey to do something about it. As a result, she decided to do something to show gratitude for those who sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan in order for us to be free and independent. She also wanted to complete this project during her Prom.
Aubrey said in an interview, “I don’t want them to fade into nothing.”
However, this was not an instantaneous decision. In reality, she already knew that she is willing to wait even if it takes two years. She took advantage of the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind prom dress that not only looked fantastic but also stood out from the crowd. And the end result was stunning.
Aubrey sewed a navy blue dress. At first sight, it didn’t seem special, but when you look closer, it has a strong resemblance to the American flag. It includes red and white ribbons as well as a starry sky blue halter top to finish the design. Her prom gown went viral not just for its beauty and uniqueness, but also because of its meticulous attention to detail.
On her dress, there were 25 names printed on red and white ribbons, alluding to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, also known as 3/5 or Darkhorse. Overall, she recorded the names of 25 soldiers who died in Helmand Province’s Sangin District from September 2010 through April 2011.
And among those who gave their lives for our country was Alec Catherwood, Gretchen’s son.
It is also worth noting that the only black ribbon bears the name “Tyler Smith.” He was a former student of Aubrey’s high school and a member of the Illinois National Guard who allegedly drowned while serving overseas.
Many people have performed something amazing for the fallen heroes, but what Aubrey has done is spectacular. Take a look at Aubrey’s prom dress and you’ll be in awe.
