Shonka Dukureh, a musician and actress who starred as Big Mama Thornton in Baz Luhrmann’s recent Elvis film, has died. She was 44 years old.
According to the Nashville Police Department, Dukureh was discovered dead in her Kothe Way home Thursday morning, where she shared with her two young children. Her child ran to a neighbor’s apartment to call for help.
Her death has been classified as pending autopsy results from the Medical Examiner’s Office, according to police. She was also in the music video for Doja Cat’s “Vegas,” which featured on the soundtrack to Elvis. Her big-screen debut was as Dukureh’s character in Elvis, the iconic R&B singer.
Dukureh was born in Nashville, Tennessee and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. She earned a Bachelors degree in Theater from Fisk University before going on to pursue a career in the performing arts.
