Delaware Sen. Chris Coons is recovering after being injured in a multi-vehicle crash over the weekend that authorities say was caused by another driver suffering a medical emergency behind the wheel.
According to the senator’s office, the longtime Democratic lawmaker sustained only minor injuries in the accident and is expected to make a full recovery after receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The collision occurred around 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, June 28, along Savannah Road in Lewes, Delaware.
Officials say Coons was riding in the front passenger seat of a vehicle being driven by one of his staff members when a pickup truck driver reportedly experienced a medical episode, lost consciousness, and crashed into several vehicles, including the senator’s car.
While the crash resulted in multiple damaged vehicles, authorities say the outcome could have been far worse.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, Coons’ office described what happened.
“Earlier today, a Delaware driver experienced a medical incident and collided with several cars, including one in which Senator Coons was a passenger,” the statement said.
The senator was transported to Beebe Hospital, where doctors treated him for what his office described as minor injuries.
Fortunately, Coons was released later that day and returned home.
“Senator Coons was transported to Beebe Hospital and treated for minor injuries,” the statement continued. “He is now home and expected to make a full and swift recovery.”
Coons also issued his own update on social media, reassuring constituents that he was recovering well while expressing gratitude toward the emergency personnel who responded so quickly.
“I’m deeply grateful to the first responders for their prompt and professional response,” the senator wrote.
He specifically thanked members of the Lewes Police Department, the Lewes and Rehoboth Beach fire departments, Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, and the physicians and nurses at Beebe Hospital.
“I received excellent care,” Coons said. “I’m feeling relieved and blessed that by all accounts no one was seriously injured during the crash.”
Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell later confirmed additional details of the accident during comments to *People* magazine.
According to Spell, the pickup truck driver’s medical emergency appears to have caused the collision.
“The vehicle in which Senator Coons was a passenger, as well as several other vehicles, were struck by a pickup truck whose driver had a suspected medical issue causing him to lose consciousness,” the police chief explained.
Just as importantly, authorities moved quickly to dispel online speculation that alcohol or drugs may have contributed to the crash.
“There are no indications of impairment of the truck driver,” Spell stated, emphasizing that investigators believe the incident resulted solely from the driver’s medical condition.
Medical emergencies behind the wheel, while relatively uncommon, can create extremely dangerous situations for everyone on the road because they often occur without warning and leave drivers unable to control their vehicles.
Fortunately, in this case, emergency crews responded rapidly, and officials report that no one involved suffered life-threatening injuries.
The incident serves as a reminder of just how quickly an ordinary drive can become dangerous through circumstances entirely outside a driver’s control.
For Sen. Coons, the outcome appears to have been about as favorable as anyone could have hoped following a serious multi-car collision. With only minor injuries reported and doctors expecting a full recovery, the Delaware senator is now recuperating at home while investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash.
