Leave it to Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) to slice through the polished spin of America’s liberal elites with humor sharp enough to sting. This week, the Louisiana Republican set his sights on none other than California Governor Gavin Newsom (D), roasting him for turning the Golden State into a haven of crime, dysfunction, and progressive hypocrisy.
In a viral clip that lit up social media, Kennedy quipped that Newsom has “put the funk into dysfunction,” a line that had conservatives laughing and left Democrats scrambling. He wasn’t joking about the facts: California’s streets are plagued with crime, homelessness, and drug abuse, all while Newsom preens on cable TV and social media, chasing the image of a future presidential run.
“Every year that he’s been governor, crime and violence have gotten worse in California,” Kennedy said, before asking the obvious: why? His answer: Newsom’s allegiance to the radical left. “Because Governor Newsom is a member of the Socialist wing of his party, because Governor Newsom has refused to get up off his ice, cold, lazy butt and do something about it.”
In classic Kennedy fashion, he didn’t just stop with criticism. He painted a picture of Newsom’s worldview — one where law enforcement is vilified, criminals are coddled, and public safety takes a back seat to woke talking points. “Governor Newsom thinks that talking about crime — he’s only doing it under pressure — is racist, because he thinks that cops are a bigger problem than criminals,” Kennedy observed.
To his credit, Kennedy admitted that even Newsom occasionally stumbles into doing the right thing. “Maybe he’s had a conversion,” Kennedy said with a smirk, noting Newsom’s recent decision to deploy California State Police. “Even a blind chicken finds a meal worm now and then.”
But Kennedy’s fire didn’t stop at Newsom. On the Senate floor, he unleashed a series of zingers that had colleagues in stitches while making a serious point about Democratic incompetence. Frustrated over a 13-hour delay caused by a doomed Democratic procedural stunt aimed at blocking GOP legislation, Kennedy skewered the waste of time: “Anybody with a brain above a single cell organism knows that a motion to commit has no chance of passing. So basically, we’ve been standing around for 13 hours. We might as well have just been standing around sucking on our teeth.”
The senator tied the spectacle to the Biden administration’s reckless spending habits, reminding Americans how Democrats shoveled out billions in giveaways with little accountability. “The prior administration handed out \$90 billion in the last 76 days… and that raised fresh hell. And now we’re about to do it again, a billion dollars,” Kennedy warned.
Still, Kennedy ended with humor — a mix of Southern wit and defiance. Recounting a supporter’s plea to withdraw an amendment, Kennedy grinned: “There are only two things I have to do in this world: be cool and die. And I’m not peeling down this amendment.”
Once again, Kennedy proved what conservatives love about him: he can dismantle the left’s nonsense with equal parts facts, wit, and charm. Meanwhile, Newsom is left holding the bag in California — a state drowning in dysfunction.
