After finishing her shopping, 21-year-old Morgan Wheeler was driving out of Walmart’s parking lot when she stopped her vehicle to allow a disabled veteran in a wheelchair to cross. Instead of driving away and going on with her day, Wheeler decided to do something extraordinary. The veterinary clinic employee parked her car and assisted the vet in doing his shopping.

At her initial offer, the man refused. Wheeler, who claims to be rather stubborn, refused to accept his refusal and pushed his wheelchair into Walmart to help him get his weekly groceries. She began telling him about herself and eventually the man opened up, telling her about the wife he had recently lost. She asked for his shopping list, and he handed her a piece of paper with four simple items listed: bananas, peanut butter, bread, and soup. When she asked him why he wasn’t getting other items, like milk and eggs, he said that those items would likely spoil before he was able to make it home. She responded by adding more items to his cart, paying for his groceries, and calling him a cab so that he would be able to get back home quickly before the items went bad.

Her kindness brought tears to his eyes, and he insisted that she was doing far too much for an old man like him. She knelt by his side and told him that he deserved all this and more for his service and for fighting for the freedom she now enjoyed. After getting him into the taxi, she went back to her car and allowed herself to shed some tears as well. When asked about her experience, she said that she felt blessed and humbled to be able to help such a hero. She hopes that more people will help veterans and others in need.
