The Trump administration says America’s long-delayed border wall is finally on track to become a reality — and not a moment too soon.
During remarks on May 7, Markwayne Mullin announced that the first major phase of the southern border wall is expected to be completed by mid-2027, marking a massive victory for President Donald Trump and his America First immigration agenda.
After years of sabotage, lawsuits, and obstruction from Democrats determined to keep the border wide open, construction crews are now building “miles of wall every single week,” according to Mullin. The administration says the initial barrier will eventually stretch from the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Gulf of America.
“When you start talking about the southern border, look, the president had made an initiative in his first term,” Mullin said. “He’s made it a strong initiative to finish the wall in his second term.”
The announcement comes as the administration ramps up one of the largest deportation operations in American history, targeting criminal illegal aliens, cartel networks, and human smuggling pipelines that exploded during the Biden years.
Mullin emphasized that the wall is not simply symbolic — it is part of a broader national security strategy designed to restore order after years of chaos at the border.
“We expect to have the first preliminary wall put up… hopefully April or June of next year,” Mullin explained. “Now, we still have a secondary wall we’ve got to build with that, but [it] will be done before the president’s out of office.”
For conservatives who spent years watching Democrats mock border security while fentanyl flooded American communities, the progress is a long-awaited reversal of the disastrous open-border policies that defined the previous administration.
Mullin also warned that while the southern border is becoming more secure, cartel operations are increasingly shifting northward, exploiting weaknesses along the Canadian border and at ports of entry.
“As we take care of the southern border, it pushes pressure for the drugs and the human smuggling pushing it to the north,” he said.
The Homeland Security chief pointed specifically to fentanyl — the deadly synthetic opioid responsible for tens of thousands of American deaths every year — as one of the administration’s top concerns. He also blasted sanctuary cities and states for effectively shielding criminals and even suspected terrorists from federal authorities.
“Sanctuary states and sanctuary cities have put everybody at risk,” Mullin declared. “Bad actors that are wanted terrorists are using sanctuary cities and sanctuary states for safe haven.”
That criticism comes as federal immigration agents continue facing resistance from Democrat-led cities that refuse to cooperate with ICE and Homeland Security Investigations.
According to Mullin, many local law enforcement officers actually want to work with federal authorities but are blocked by left-wing mayors and governors more interested in political posturing than public safety.
“ICE agents and HSI agents are simply wanting to do their job,” he said. “Most law enforcement we work with want to do their job, but they have a governor or mayor that’s prohibiting [them] from doing so.”
The comments came just one day after hundreds of federal agents swept through MacArthur Park in a massive crackdown targeting drug trafficking and criminal activity. Authorities reportedly seized enough fentanyl during the operation to potentially kill 200,000 Americans — a chilling reminder of what is still pouring into the country.
For millions of Americans who watched the border spiral out of control under Democrat leadership, the renewed push to finish the wall represents more than just construction. It represents accountability, law and order, and a government finally putting American citizens first again.
