The Republican National Committee is turning up the heat on the reliably blue state of New Jersey, filing a major lawsuit that could shake up the political landscape ahead of a pivotal gubernatorial election—and possibly set the stage for a Trump victory in 2028.

In a bold move on July 17, 2025, the RNC officially filed suit against the New Jersey Division of Elections, accusing state officials of refusing to release crucial records related to voting machines and voter roll maintenance—records that should be publicly available under the state’s Open Public Records Act (OPRA). The lawsuit marks another front in the GOP’s aggressive strategy to restore election integrity and ensure states are held accountable when they fall short of federal standards.

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley laid out the party’s stance clearly: “State officials are slow-walking access to records about voting machines and voter roll maintenance. The RNC is taking legal action because the people of New Jersey have a right to know that their elections are being run fairly, securely, and in full compliance with the law.”

And there’s good reason to press the issue.

In the 2024 presidential election, President Donald J. Trump came surprisingly close to flipping the Garden State. He secured a stunning 46.1% of the vote—just shy of Kamala Harris’s 52%—raising eyebrows in a state that has long been considered safe territory for Democrats. That razor-thin margin sent shockwaves through New Jersey’s political establishment and energized the GOP base.

Whatley also appeared on Newsmax, where he emphasized that New Jersey is not just stonewalling transparency—it’s actively violating federal law. “It’s a federal law that they have to clean their voter rolls every single year,” Whatley explained. “We sent a letter out to every state, including New Jersey, asking when they last complied. They never responded—not once.”

After being ignored multiple times, the RNC had had enough. “We sent a follow-up letter. They did not respond. So yesterday we filed a lawsuit,” Whatley said. “We’re going to federal court and we’re going to say, ‘You have to abide by this. You’ve got to clean up your voter rolls.’”

The lawsuit isn’t just about legal compliance—it’s about protecting the future of New Jersey’s elections. With a hotly contested governor’s race on the horizon, Republicans smell blood in the water. Whatley noted, “Republicans have a great opportunity for a pickup there. We need to know we can trust the electoral system.”

In a further escalation, the RNC has also asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate New Jersey’s failures. “They are not following federal law. We think DOJ should take a look,” Whatley said.

Pollsters are also sounding the alarm on New Jersey’s shifting political winds. Patrick Murray of the Monmouth University Polling Institute admitted, “There’s no question that the Democratic brand is not as strong as it has been in the bluest areas of the country—and that includes New Jersey.”

With the RNC on the offensive and grassroots enthusiasm building, New Jersey may no longer be a safe haven for Democrats. The battle for the Garden State has begun.
