In a stunning display of betrayal, over a dozen House Republicans have turned their backs on President Donald Trump and subverted the hard work of his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), siding with Democrats to push back against much-needed layoffs at the Social Security Administration (SSA).

This latest RINO (Republican In Name Only) move came on May 6, 2025, when 15 Republican lawmakers sent a letter to Frank Bisignano, the newly confirmed head of the SSA, criticizing staffing cuts and reforms that were authorized by DOGE. In doing so, they fell in line with Democrats, who have been relentlessly opposing any attempts to streamline and reduce the bloated federal bureaucracy.

The letter, which echoed concerns typically raised by the left, expressed alarm over the impact of the layoffs, with the lawmakers claiming that the cuts could “cause issues for American taxpayers.” They argued that their constituents, especially seniors and the disabled, “heavily rely” on Social Security services and that reducing staff would risk “fraud and abuse.” They even voiced concerns that the verification process could become “overly burdensome” for elderly and disabled Americans, as well as for those in rural areas who already struggle to access SSA services.

While the letter stopped short of a full-blown attack on DOGE, the agency leading the charge to root out inefficiency, the Republicans made clear their misgivings about the reforms. They acknowledged that DOGE was working to make the bureaucracy “more efficient,” but implied that its methods were reckless, potentially harming vulnerable Americans who rely on Social Security for their retirement and income.

This move, though cloaked in concern for seniors and the disabled, looks more like an attempt to block the very reforms that President Trump has championed to reduce waste and corruption within the federal government. By siding with Democrats and defending a bloated SSA, these Republicans are not only undermining the president’s agenda, but they are also siding with the very establishment that Trump has spent years fighting against.

The 15 GOP lawmakers — including Reps. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Ryan Mackenzie (R-PA), Don Bacon (R-NE), Gabe Evans (R-CO), Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ), and others — also used the letter to cast themselves as “guardians” of Social Security, claiming they were “committed to preserving, improving, and making the Social Security Administration more efficient for beneficiaries.” But their reluctance to support the necessary reductions in the SSA shows their allegiance to the very big-government bureaucracy that Trump is working to dismantle.

Their letter was sent on the same day Frank Bisignano was confirmed by the Senate as the new SSA Commissioner. As expected, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) blasted Bisignano’s confirmation, calling it a “disgraceful moment” and accusing Republicans of trying to “strangle” Social Security through a “slash-and-burn” approach.

The fact that these Republicans are now aligning themselves with the left-wing critics of President Trump’s pro-taxpayer reforms speaks volumes about their true intentions. It’s clear that these RINOs are more interested in maintaining the status quo — an inefficient, bloated system — than in taking the hard steps needed to fix it.

President Trump has been clear: The government must work for the American people, not for itself. These Republicans, however, seem all too eager to protect the bureaucrats at the expense of those they were elected to serve. It’s time for true conservatives to hold these RINOs accountable and demand they stop undermining the efforts to streamline government and save taxpayer dollars.
